EU chief: Trump's Jerusalem decision "discredited" America "as an honest broker"

The announcement led to outbreaks of violence in the region, with Christian and Muslim protestors clashing with Israeli police, and protests throughout the Arab world.

But just as significantly, Trump’s decision to effectively drop a two-state solution provoked outrage from America’s allies, as the top diplomat of the European Union, Federica Mogherini, made clear.

Trump’s decision, Mogherini said, “has discredited a bit the United States as an honest broker.” Mogherini also told reporters in a press conference that the EU’s position on the Arab-Israeli conflict had not changed.

“The European Union has a clear and united position,” she said. “We believe the only realistic solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine is based on two states and with Jerusalem as the capital of both.”

Trump’s reversal of U.S. policy on Israel follows a long string of humiliating foreign policy decisions.

Trump has made America the sole country to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. He has pulled us out of UNESCO, the U.N. Migrant and Refugee Compact, and a treaty to police financial corruption in the oil and gas industry. He has also repeatedly attacked other members of NATO, falsely claiming that they owe the United States money.

In general, he does not appear to recognize that the international community has common goals or that America has any responsibility to work toward them.

If Trump continues to ignore the warnings of foreign diplomats like Mogherini, the United States will find itself with no friends, powerless to help itself as the world moves on without us.
