Fox News calls veteran black anchor “that girl at ESPN”
Fox News amplified the Trump administration’s attacks on ESPN journalist Jemele Hill, who is a black woman, describing the veteran journalist as “that girl from ESPN.” On Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called on ESPN to fire Hill for accurately calling out Donald Trump’s vocal support for white supremacists. On Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders called on ESPN to fire Hill for accurately calling out Donald Trump’s vocal support for white supremacists.
Sanders appeared on “Fox & Friends,” Trump’s favorite show on the conservative propaganda network, and in the wind-up to asking her about Hill, co-host Ainsley Earhardt referred to the 41-year-old Hill as a “girl.”
EARHARDT: Sarah, have you talked to the president about what Jemele Hill, that girl at ESPN, said? She tweeted out that he was a white supremacist and then she said later that she was sorry for putting ESPN in that position but didn’t retract what she said?
Hill is 41 years old. Her journalistic credentials include working as a sports writer for the Raleigh News & Observer, Detroit Free Press, and as a columnist for the Orlando Sentinel and ESPN.com. She has appeared on multiple ESPN programs and has worked on the network as a sideline reporter.
Hill currently is the co-anchor of SportsCenter, the flagship program for ESPN, the most watched sports network.
Describing someone with that background as “that girl at ESPN” exemplifies the kind of racist dismissal and diminishment of accomplished people of color that permeates the network’s coverage.
Most notably, Fox was the incubator for Trump’s racist attacks on President Barack Obama when he continually claimed, for years, that the 44th president was born on foreign soil, an attack designed to “other” Obama, as the first black president.
Hosts at the network compared Black Lives Matter to the Ku Klux Klan, while defending police who have physically attacked black people.
Fox helped to build Trump, and when his administration lashes out at criticism from a prominent black figure, the loyal lapdog that is Fox has his back with another racial dig.
