Donald Trump is facing increasing criticism over his decision to unilaterally launch an airstrike on a Syrian air base, but Hillary Clinton focused her criticism elsewhere.
At an Annie’s List luncheon in Texas, Clinton called Trump out for expressing concern over Syrian babies killed in the chemical attack, while simultaneously seeking to choke off refugees from the troubled region.
Clinton spoke briefly about the complicated way forward in Syria, then pointedly called out Trump for the disconnect between his expressions of grief at children killed in the chemical weapons attack and his cruel refugee policies:
So I hope this administration will move forward in a way that is both strategic and consistent with our values.
And I also hope that they will recognize that we cannot in one breath speak of protecting Syrian babies, and in the next close American doors.
Trump cannot have it both ways. He cannot feign concern for Syrian children while fighting for policies that harm them. It is still an open question whether his limited strike will end up being of any benefit to suffering Syrians, but taking in refugees most certainly would be.
