In 24 chaotic hours, Trump shows he can't even bother to understand his own deportation plan

As nearly one million young immigrants in America ponder the possibility of being deported to countries they haven’t seen since childhood, Donald Trump continues to toy with their emotions. Alternately insisting his administration will kick out undocumented immigrants who were brought here in their youth, and then U-turning and claiming Congress will soon provide those immigrants with legal sanctuary, Trump once again doesn’t seem to understand what his own policy position is.

And instead of providing guidance, he’s causing chaos and tumult.

NBC’s Jim Acosta noted Trump erratic policy behavior:

On Tuesday, using a batch of lies, Trump’s administration called for the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which President Barack Obama introduced to shield young undocumented immigrants, or Dreamers, from deportation by providing them with permits to work and study in the U.S., so long as they arrived as children, and before June 15, 2012.

The initiative has granted work permits to approximately 800,000 young undocumented immigrants. And it’s estimated that 65,000 Dreamers graduate from high school each year in America.

“They are that pitcher on our kid’s softball team, that first responder who helps out his community after a disaster, that cadet in ROTC who wants nothing more than to wear the uniform of the country that gave him a chance,” noted Obama.

Today, just 15 percent of Americans support Trump’s plan to deport Dreamers.

As with his appalling comments after the racist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, when Trump went out of his way to give political cover to Nazis and Klansmen, the reaction to Trump’s plan to deport children has been met with condemnation from Democrats, Republicans, and business leaders.

That relentless blowback may be one reason thin-skinned Trump took to Twitter Tuesday night and seemingly undermined his own administration’s policy, suggesting he might “revisit” the issue next year.

“Just hours after the angry reaction to Mr. Trump’s decision, the president appeared to have second thoughts,” The New York Times reported. That’s right — Trump seemed to have “second thoughts” about his policy the same day the administration announced his policy.

Trump has shown himself to be a raging hypocrite on the issue of deporting Dreamers, which means his flip-flopping will likely continue. And Trump’s so untrustworthy, that softening tone from Tuesday night might soon be swept away with more hard-line calls to kick lots of kids out of America.

Indeed, the policy whiplash over the emotional issue has been constant in the last 24 hours. “White House talking points on Tuesday urged DACA recipients to prepare for a ‘departure from the United States,’ a much starker possible future than Trump administration officials used in public when announcing an end to the program,” CNN reported.

Trump appears to be a man incapable of empathy. He also seems to have no idea what his immigration policy is.
