Remember last week when Donald Trump opted not to announce the decision start deporting young, undocumented immigrants himself? Instead, Trump sent out his stridently anti-immigrant Attorney General Jeff Session to make the declaration about dismantling the Obama era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

At the time, Sessions seemed giddy at the chance to kick out nearly 800,000 young immigrants. He cowardly refused to take any questions at the time.

But now we might have a better understanding of why Trump had Sessions make the official announcement, because Trump likely knew he was going to soon flip-flop on immigration and would end up throwing Sessions under the bus.

In the wake of the news that Trump has indeed agreed with work with Democrats to keep those DREAMers in America, Sessions finds himself with bus tire tracks running across his back. In just over one week, Sessions has gone from the point person on the white nationalists’ dream of tossing immigrants out, to the guy left holding the bag while Trump runs off and joins forces with Democrats.

For Sessions, it’s another in a line of humiliations handed out by Trump this year.

Trump has been fuming for months over Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the ongoing investigation into Russia’s election interference. Viewing Sessions as his personal attorney rather than America’s top cop, Trump seems angry that Sessions can’t protect him from investigators.

In fact, The New York Times reported on Thursday that Trump personally berated Sessions in an Oval Office meeting in May.

“Ashen and emotional, Mr. Sessions told the president he would quit and sent a resignation letter to the White House, according to four people who were told details of the meeting,” according to the Times. “Mr. Sessions would later tell associates that the demeaning way the president addressed him was the most humiliating experience in decades of public life.”

In July, Trump took to Twitter to again belittle his own AG:

When Trump pivoted this month and tapped Sessions to deliver the DACA news, it was seen as a sign that Trump was bringing his attorney general in from the cold.

Sessions made the most of his moment in the spotlight, and his white nationalists fans cheered. Breitbart’s White House correspondent even tweeted that Sessions was “going full Breitbart with this announcement.”

Full Breitbart, indeed. During his announcement, Sessions lied about DACA recipients mostly being “adult illegal aliens.” He lied when he claimed DACA had caused a “surge of minors at the southern border with humanitarian consequences.” He lied about DREAMers receiving the same Social Security benefits as Americans. And he lied when he insisted the DACA program had “denied jobs to hundreds of thousands of Americans by allowing those same illegal aliens to take those jobs.”

Now Trump is working with Democrats. Not only does that completely undercut Sessions’ personal agenda within the administration, it also undercuts the arguments Sessions made last week in hopes of dismantling DACA.

From this day forward, how can Sessions, or his fans at Breitbart, argue that DACA allows in criminals who take American jobs when his white nationalist boss wants to save DACA?

He can’t.
