Speaker Paul Ryan responded to the criminal charges and guilty pleas involving three different officials from the Trump campaign by renewing his push for tax cuts for the wealthy.
Even the news that Trump campaign officials have been charged with conspiracy against the United States has not deterred Ryan from sticking to his pursuit of gutting critical government programs to give handouts to the ultra-wealth — a lifelong goal he has purportedly supported since he was a young boy.
During an interview with a Wisconsin radio host, Ryan shockingly and stubbornly remained silent on the criminality enveloping the Trump administration.
“I really don’t have anything to add other than nothing is going to derail what we’re doing in Congress,” Ryan told the host.
Ryan is pushing to raise taxes on the middle class while also eliminating key provisions like the estate tax, which would provide a multi-billion dollar windfall to the wealthiest of the wealthiest, like Ivanka Trump and her siblings, who stand to receive $4 billion in Ryan gets his way.
As Ryan, next in line to the presidency only after Vice President Mike Pence, shamefully shirked his responsibility, Democratic officials were speaking out about the criminality at the highest levels.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said the indictments showed the need for “an outside, fully independent investigation to expose Russia’s meddling in our election and the involvement of Trump officials.”
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said, “The special counsel’s probe is ongoing in a serious way. The rule of law is paramount in America & the investigation must proceed unimpeded.”
Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) wrote, “It is imperative that Congress take action now to protect the independence of the Special Counsel.”
Top Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have remained silent along with Ryan.
Ryan has often sought to distance himself and the Republican agenda from Trump, but despite his attempts and strange rhetoric, the various entities are interconnected.
Ryan cannot achieve his hardcore right-wing policy dreams without Trump’s signature, while Trump needs Ryan and McConnell to deliver the votes to enact his agenda. Both tracks have been complete failures thus far, and the swirl of criminality is unlikely to help those successes.
Despite this, Ryan continues to live in a made-up world of delusion, where Trump is not dogged by corruption, bigotry, and criminality. But that isn’t the real world we live in.
