The South Dakota governor claimed the administration’s decision to block a fireworks show at Mount Rushmore while holding a similar celebration in the nation’s capital was ‘political’ and ‘punitive.’

A federal judge said forcing the Interior Department to allow Independence Day fireworks despite safety concerns would be ‘improper judicial activism.’

‘The State of South Dakota is suffering from widespread drought conditions, low humidity, high wind, and high temperatures that create serious peril for our state,’ Gov. Kristi Noem said in March.
