Trump accidentally admits he's only not under investigation "in theory"

Donald Trump made news on Saturday with his gloss on Richard Nixon’s infamous “I am not a crook” declaration. But a fascinating slip accompanied his false insistence that there’s been “no crime” uncovered by special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Ever since Trump fired FBI Director James Comey under a fake cover story, he and his administration have been clinging to the lie that Trump is “not under investigation,” which is belied by copious published reporting.

But during his remarks at Camp David on Saturday, Trump himself exposed the cracks in that lie.

While falsely insisting that “There’s been no crime,” Trump admitted that he’s only investigation-free “in theory.”

Yeah. Just so you understand — just so you understand, there’s been no collusion; there’s been no crime. And in theory, everybody tells me I’m not under investigation. Maybe Hillary is, I don’t know, but I’m not. But there’s been no collusion. There’s been no crime.

The lie that Trump is telling is based on assurances from Comey that Trump was not yet personally the target of the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign.

But those assurances ironically expired the moment Trump fired Comey, and admitted he had done so to obstruct the Russia investigation.

Trump’s admission may seem small, but it is a significant window into a man who is unraveling before our eyes, and now finally seems to be grappling with the reality that he is, indeed, in the crosshairs of the Mueller investigation.
