One of Donald Trump’s biggest campaign promises in 2016 was his vow to immediately repeal Obamacare. But after the White House and Speaker Paul Ryan’s humiliating failure to even get a vote on the GOP repeal plan, support for Obamacare is through the roof.

In a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, only 37 percent now support the Republican repeal agenda. By contrast, 61 percent say Obamacare should stay in place, and Congress should work to to fix its flaws rather than repealing it entirely.

Trump has falsely claimed that Obamacare is collapsing and threatened to sabotage the law by withholding subsidies needed to keep coverage in place, so that he could then blame Democrats for its failure.

That position has also been rebuked by an overwhelming majority of voters: 79 percent say Trump should work to make the law work, rather than try to blow it up from the inside.

Trump is an unpopular president, who supported an unpopular health care initiative that would have stripped coverage from millions. After the failure of that plan, Republicans are apparently ignoring the clear message from voters and working on an even harsher plan that brings back the pre-existing condition while rewarding millionaires with tax cuts.

At the same time, the law put in place by President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party without a single vote from Republicans is experiencing a renaissance of support. Faced with the stark contrast between the Democratic health care reform and the Republican alternative, it is not even close.

Trump’s attacks on Obamacare are only making it more popular. The growing support for the very thing Trump wants to destroy is evidence that Americans are rejecting Trump and his agenda.
