Trump's personal lawyer claims he had US attorney fired: "This guy is going to get you."
Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney had a hand in Trump’s decision to fire the U.S. attorney who was investigating him — and he’s very proud of it. That’s according to a new report from ProPublica, in which multiple sources claim that Marc Kasowitz “has boasted to friends and colleagues that he played a central role in the firing of Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.”
Before Kasowitz was officially hired to help Trump navigate the growing investigations into his campaign’s ties to Russia, he apparently warned Trump that Bharara was a danger to Trump, warning him, “This guy is going to get you.”
Trump fired Bharara in March, after initially asking him to stay on in his role as U.S. attorney. As ProPublica notes, “Kasowitz’s claimed role in the Bharara firing appears to be a sign that the New York lawyer has been inserting himself into matters of governance and not just advising the president on personal legal matters.”
Kasowitz has served as Trump’s personal attorney for 15 years on a number of matters, including defending Trump against sexual harassment claims. Kasowitz was recently hired to help Trump navigate the increasing scandals and investigations implicating Trump’s campaign, and perhaps even Trump himself, in secret meetings and possible collusion with Russia.
Since his hiring to help on Russia, the White House has insisted that it will not answer any questions about Russia and refers reporters to Kasowitz instead. Kasowitz has vigorously attacked former FBI Director James’s testimony before the Senate and called him a liar, while also insisting — as Trump did on Twitter — that Comey’s testimony “vindicated” Trump.
Adding to the already endless list of potential conflicts of interest for this administration is the report that Trump is considering replacing Bharara, the attorney Kasowitz claims to have had fired, with a partner at Kasowitz’s law firm.
Trump’s administration is already tainted with the stench of scandal and corruption. That Trump’s personal attorney may have guided his decision to fire a government employee who could be a problem for Trump only makes the White House stink that much worse.
