Two American soldiers killed in Afghanistan, and Trump is at his golf course — again
Once again, Donald Trump hightailed it out of Washington, where he ostensibly lives to do his job as president of the United States. Trump is spending yet another weekend at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey, which his team has absurdly tried to coin the “Summer White House.” There is only one White House, and it is not in New Jersey.
But Trump requires his time — lots of time — on the links. And nothing — apparently, not even the tragic death of two American soldiers in Afghanistan — will get in his way.
According to the White House pool report, the president is spending his day at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, the deadly attack in Afghanistan be damned:
A spokesman says “the president is following the emerging situation in Afghanistan,” referring to two American soldiers killed by an Afghan soldier. […]
Pool repeatedly asked what the president is doing today at his golf course and whether he’s taking any meetings, having working meetings from the course, or playing golf but were told the administration will send an update when and if they get one. We will continue asking.
How Trump has spent his weekends since assuming the Oval Office is hardly a mystery, despite great efforts by his administration to keep it a secret.
In the first months of the year, Trump regularly flew to Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Florida, where press pictures clearly showed him on his golf course, in golf attire, riding in golf carts, and walking with golf clubs.
Now that the weather has changed, he is doing the exact same thing in New Jersey.
Given the constant attacks Trump launched against President Barack Obama for spending any time outside of the White House — on vacation or, very occasionally, on the golf course — it is perhaps not surprising that Trump’s team tries to obfuscate the obvious fact that Trump is spending every moment he possibly can golfing.
“I’m going to be working for you,” Trump promised on the campaign trail. “I’m not going to have time to go play golf.
What is surprising is that even in the midst of tragic news of military deaths, this president — who insisted so fervently throughout his campaign that he loves the troops more than any other candidate ever has — still will not be deterred from his favorite hobby.
While the White House refuses to confirm what exactly Trump is doing at his golf course, it is not difficult to guess. Nor will it be surprising when the photos of him playing golf inevitably emerge.
Perhaps when he returns to the White House after another weekend of golf, he’ll find the time to show concern for the deaths of our soldiers.
