Watch Trump praise Comey's handling of Clinton investigation: "It took a lot of guts"
The sudden firing of FBI Director James Comey was greeted with immediate surprise, but also with suspicion that this move was nothing more than a cover-up by Donald Trump and his administration. As if to prove the baselessness of Trump’s purported reasons for the firing — that the administration felt Comey mishandled the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails — Trump himself is on video praising Comey during the campaign for having “guts” and for doing “the right thing.”
And I have to give the FBI credit. That was so bad, what happened originally. And it took guts for Director Comey to make the move that he made in light of the kind of opposition he had, with trying to protect her criminal prosecution. You know that. It took a lot of guts.
I really disagreed with him, I was not his fan. But I’ll tell you what. What he did, he brought back his reputation. He brought it back. He’s gotta hang tough, ’cause there’s a lot of people want him to do the wrong thing. What he did was the right thing.
It is anyone’s guess which version of Trump’s view of Comey is the genuine one — or if either stance can be considered as such, given the source.
But this kind of blatant flip-flopping only goes to further prove Trump’s dearth of trustworthiness, and the dire need for an independent special prosecutor to carry out the investigation into the Trump team’s ties to Russia, and Russia’s interference in our election.
That would be “the right thing” to do for the country and for our democracy.
