GOP's obsession with putting women and doctors in jail backfires with voters

As Republicans wage an all-out assault on women’s right to access an abortion, support across the country for a woman’s right to choose has seen a marked jump, according to NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll data released on Monday.

More than half of Americans, or 56%, say abortion should be legal “all or most of the time,” according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll numbers. The same poll question from September 2008 found that 49% supported abortion being legal all or most of the time.

That 7-point jump over the last decade comes as Republicans in Congress have spouted completely false conspiracy theories about abortions, including lies about infanticide that they are using to push for unnecessary and dangerous anti-abortion legislation.

It also comes as GOP-controlled state legislatures move to not only ban abortion in all or most cases, but criminalize it. That includes Alabama’s new law that bans abortion in all instances, including in the case of rape or incest, and states health care providers who perform abortion procedures will face up to 99 years in prison.

While Alabama’s law in the most extreme, other states are also passing strict abortion bans, prohibiting women from getting abortions after six weeks gestation — before many women even know they’re pregnant.

But all of these attempts to restrict abortion have done nothing to swing public opinion in Republicans’ favor.

In fact, support for legal abortion has grown in almost a groups, including men, women, Democrats and even Republicans, according to the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Even more, 34% of Americans say abortion should always be legal, an all-time high in the poll’s history, up from 31% in March 2018.

The Republican war on women’s health care is backfiring big time.
