GOP congressman votes against military families and disaster victims in the same week
Texas Rep. Chip Roy’s votes show someone unwilling to help hurting families.
On Friday, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) objected to a measure approving funds to help Americans recovering from hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. Because of his vote, spending cannot be approved for two weeks, leaving those families in limbo.
But that wasn’t the first time this week that Roy has voted against popular, bipartisan legislation that would help Americans in need. Just the day before, on Thursday, he voted to oppose repealing a provision of the Trump tax scam that raised taxes on military families.
Thursday’s measure had large bipartisan supporting, passing the House on a vote of 417-3. Roy was one of the three who voted against the bill, along with Republican Reps. Thomas Massie (KY) and Justin Amash (MI).
Thanks to the GOP tax scam, military widows and widowers saw a spike in their taxes. Some families had to pay as much as four times what they used to because the Trump-backed legislation introduced new taxes on benefits coming into military families.
Roy was slammed for standing against military families.
“Congressman Roy’s shocking vote for higher taxes on families who lost a loved one in service of the nation is not only political malpractice, it’s a moral stain on his record,” said Avery Jaffe, spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, in a statement. “Chip Roy will have to live with this vote for the rest of his life.”
Roy’s votes against military families and disaster relief show that his vehement opposition to helping families is not a mistake or a coincidence, but a record of his callous approach to human suffering.
