As Donald Trump continues to add more and more evidence to the case for his unfitness for office, a lot of people around the nation are openly discussing ways to confront this troubling situation.

And some of those people are right inside Trump’s own West Wing.

According to Michael Wolff, author of the bombshell exposé “Fire and Fury,” West Wing staffers invoke the possibility of the 25th Amendment on a frighteningly regular basis.

As far as Trump’s Twitter rants and endless series of bizarre statements and outright lies, it’s “not unreasonable to say this is 25th Amendment kind of stuff,” Wolff told NBC’s Chuck Todd.

And when Todd asked if people in the West Wing have said that themselves, Wolff was clear.

“All the time,” he noted gravely.

WOLFF: What happened here? What’s going on here? This is, I think, not an exaggeration and not unreasonable — it’s not unreasonable to say this is 25th Amendment kind of stuff. This is —

TODD: Did anybody say that in the West Wing to you?

WOLFF: All the time. All the time.

TODD: 25th Amendment? They would bring up the 25th Amendment?

WOLFF: Yes. Actually, they would say, “We’re not — sort of, in the mid-period, we’re not at a 25th Amendment level yet.” Or they would —

TODD: That’s alarming!

WOLFF: Yeah, this is alarming in every way. And then this went on, “Okay, this is a little 25th Amendment.”  So 25th Amendment is a concept that is alive every day in the White House.

It is both good and terrifying to know that the people closest to Trump realize that he is so obviously unfit to occupy the office of the presidency.

Good because it means that people who potentially have the power to do something about it recognize the problem. And terrifying because of just what that problem is: the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth seems to be daily spiraling downward, and could take the rest of us with him.

As Wolff noted, “this is alarming in every way.” And those closest to Trump need to put the security and the very safety of the country, and the world, over their blind allegiance to a dangerously unfit president.
