Trump's Border Patrol chief was in secret Facebook group that mocked dead kids
Carla Provost was a part of a bigoted Border Patrol group on Facebook.
Carla Provost, the acting chief of U.S. Customs and Border Protection under Trump, was a member of a secret Facebook group where vile and bigoted posts mocking migrants were frequently exchanged.
The Intercept reported Provost’s involvement with the group on Friday. Trump put Provost in charge of the agency in July of last year.
One post in the notorious group mocked the haunting image of a father and his two-year-old daughter who were found drowned in the Rio Grande. “Have y’all ever seen floaters this clean,” a member of Provost’s group wrote.
Another post in the group dismissively commented, “If he dies, he dies,” at news that a 16-year-old Guatemalan teen died in U.S. custody in May.
In addition to mocking migrants, posters in the Facebook group also posted vulgar and sexist memes about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who has slammed abuse of migrants under Trump.
The content shows “a pervasive culture of cruelty aimed at immigrants,” sociologist Daniel Martinez told ProPublica when the group was first revealed.
The Intercept also noted that Provost was one of several Border Patrol supervisors and high-ranking officials in the group.
When the group was disclosed, Provost called the posts “completely inappropriate” and “contrary to the honor and integrity” of the agency. She also said, “Any employees found to have violated our standards of conduct will be held accountable.”
Now it turns out she was involved with the hate and bile expressed in the group, as much as she is involved in the disturbing revelations about what is being done to migrants under the Trump administration.
