CNN notes that at the meeting, Burr said that when he walked into a gun store, “nothing made me feel better” than seeing Clinton’s picture on the front of a magazine about rifles.
His only problem with it? “I was a little bit shocked at that — it didn’t have a bulls-eye on it.” After his audience’s laughter, he noted that there is an “army of support” for Republican candidates.
Burr, who is the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and is locked in a tight race for reelection against former Democratic state Representative Deborah Ross, later issued an apology in a statement to CNN, saying his comment was “inappropriate.”
But it was far more than inappropriate. It was despicable, crude, and dangerous. Trump supporters have been making threats against Clinton for months now. To have an elected official spouting similar sentiments is inexcusable and abhorrent.
Republican politicians should be denouncing the violent hatred from some sectors of their base. Instead, some of them see fit to join in.
