Rudy Giuliani literally just said, ‘Truth isn’t truth’

‘I think this is going to become a bad meme,’ an astonished Chuck Todd replied.

Chuck Todd and Rudy Giuliani

Rudy Giuliani has given us the new perfect phrase to describe the constant lies in Trumpworld. Say goodbye to “alternative facts,” and hello to “truth isn’t truth.”

On Sunday morning’s edition of “Meet the Press,” Giuliani complained to host Chuck Todd that he didn’t want Trump to be rushed into an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller. Giuliani claimed doing this would get Trump “trapped into perjury,” because Trump’s testimony would be compared with “somebody’s version of the truth.”

“Truth is truth!” Todd interrupted.

“No, it isn’t truth!” Giuliani exclaimed. “Truth isn’t truth! The president of the United States says I didn’t — ”

“Truth isn’t truth? an astonished Todd stammered. “Mr. Mayor, do you realize what — I think is going to become a bad meme.”

“Don’t do this — don’t do this to me,” Giuliani begged, to which Todd replied, “Don’t do ‘Truth isn’t truth’ to me!”

“Donald Trump says I didn’t talk about Flynn with Comey. Comey says you did talk about it. So tell me what the truth is?” Giuliani asked.

“Don McGahn might know,” Todd replied.

“Don McGahn doesn’t know,” Giuliani insisted, once again absurdly claiming that the only evidence that Mueller has to go on is the word of two witnesses, Comey and Trump.

Aside from its comical similarity to White House counselor Kellyanne Conway’s infamous phrase, “alternative facts,” Giuliani’s premise ignores a key point.

It’s not just Trump’s word against Comey’s. If Mueller believes Comey’s version of events, it will be because he has corroborating evidence supporting Comey’s testimony that Trump tried to quash the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

As Todd pointed out, there’s White House counsel Don McGahn, who has given 30 hours of testimony to Mueller, possibly including testimony on this subject.

There are also the contemporaneous memos that Comey composed at the time, which carry great evidentiary weight under the law.

And finally, there is Giuliani himself, who has said, on multiple occasions, that Trump did try to influence Comey on Flynn’s behalf.

Giuliani used to claim that this wasn’t a crime — but lately, he has taken to denying that Trump and Comey even talked about Flynn at all.

Giuliani’s statement might serve as a great bumper sticker for Trump’s reelection campaign.

But unfortunately for both Giuliani and his client, truth really is truth. And before long, the truth is going to catch up to Trump.
