Donald Trump did not enter into office with high approval or trust from voters. The past year of chaos and right-wing assaults on our institutions and principles from both the White House and his allies in Congress has led to him becoming the least popular first-year president since modern polling began.
And a new poll from NBC News/Wall Street Journal brings a new piece of bad news for Trump: more Americans want to impeach him than vote for him in 2020.
According to the poll, 41 percent of voters believe that “Congress should hold impeachment hearings to remove Donald Trump from office.” By contrast, just 36 percent of Americans “definitely” or “probably” will vote for Trump in 2020 if he runs for a second term.
The poll further finds that a plurality of Americans believe both that Trump colluded with Russia in 2016, and that special counsel Robert Mueller’s indictments of Trump campaign and administration officials are indicative of wrongdoing by Trump himself.
If Trump is hoping the GOP tax scam will save him, he is out of luck. The same poll finds that only 7 percent of people think that bill was designed to help “middle class Americans,” versus 63 percent who think it is for “corporations and wealthy Americans.”
Trump has packed all the controversy and career-ending scandal of some of the most disgraced administrations in American history into a single, explosive year. With major elections around the corner, his fortunes are only headed downward.
