Trump melts down as more Americans want to see him impeached

More Americans are calling for impeachment hearings to investigate Trump’s potential crimes described in the Mueller report — and Trump’s response is to freak out and push Fox News propaganda about Hillary Clinton’s emails.

“Wow!  The State Department said it has identified 30 Security Incidents involving current or former employees and their handling of Crooked Hillary Clinton’s Emails,” Trump wrote in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

The tweet was based — as Trump’s tweets so often are — on conspiracy theories aired on Fox News, which is devoted to propping up his presidency.

Trump followed that up with another proclamation of “No Collusion, No Obstruction!” The Mueller report showed that Trump’s campaign tried to get information from Russian operatives that could influence the 2016 elections, and that Trump tried multiple times to obstruct special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Trump’s tweets come as support for impeachment has increased by 10 points in a major national poll.

“Overall, 27 percent of Americans say there’s enough evidence to begin impeachment hearings now — up 10 points from last month,” NBC News reported on Sunday, detailing the results of a new poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal.

Another 24% of Americans want Congress to keep investigating to see if there is enough evidence to begin impeachment hearings. And among Democrats, support for impeachment hearings has sharply increased just over the last month, from 30% to 48%.

The poll, which also showed Trump still widely unpopular with a 44% approval rating, echoes the growing concern across the country about his crimes, as detailed in the Mueller report.

While a majority of Americans don’t yet support impeachment, the sharply rising trend is bad news for Trump — especially given the history of how impeachment hearings went for President Richard Nixon.

Nixon began 1973 with a sky-high 68% approval rating, far higher than Trump has ever achieved (Trump has never gotten above 50%). The televised Watergate hearings began in May of 1973, and as the public became more and more aware of the criminal conduct Nixon engaged in, his approval ratings collapsed. By August of 1974, Nixon’s approval was 24% and he resigned from office in shame.

Support for impeaching Trump has increased by double digits before Congress has begun any sort of formal proceedings, a sign that Americans lack confidence in his presidency and increasingly believe he violated his presidential oath.

Nixon began the process that led to his eventual, shameful resignation in a much better position than Trump currently is in.

At least 50 lawmakers say it is time for such hearings to begin, and the American public is warming up to the idea. No wonder Trump is back in his safe space, ranting about Fox News conspiracies and Hillary Clinton’s emails.
