Trump team wants to take money from injured workers to fund border plan
The Trump team wants to take a lot of money from the TSA, which would have a ‘significant impact’ on travelers this summer.
The Trump administration has a plan to steal $64 million from a fund set aside for injured TSA workers in their effort to find money to support Trump’s border plan.
A Tuesday report from NBC News identifies this and several other ways the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will find enough money meet their $1.1 billion goal to fund Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda at the border.
A DHS spokesperson told NBC News that the department is “considering all options,” including taking funding away for TSA security officers at airports. Such a move could have a “significant impact” on travelers this summer, resulting in longer lines and increased wait times at airports, according to NBC.
In addition, DHS wants to nab $50 million needed to purchase advanced screening equipment for airports. In total, DHS is looking to take $232 million from TSA, an amount that alarmed one senior TSA official, who wrote he “expects programs will be broken if funding is reduced,” according to an email obtained by NBC.
DHS is scrambling to find funding to implement a border plan that includes deporting immigrant children more quickly, jailing kids and families even longer than is happening now, and forcing asylum-seekers to apply for asylum in their home country.
The Trump administration asked Congress for an additional $4.5 billion deal with the crisis Trump helped created at the U.S.-Mexico border. The documents obtained by NBC are plans of what to do if Congress does not provide the full amount Trump requested.
In addition to hindering air travel, Trump officials are even looking at taking money meant to help communities recover after natural disasters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is being pressured to hand over a portion of their budget to fund Trump’s racist immigration policies.
Trump’s vile anti-immigrant policies were already hurting him with voters in swing states.
From longer airport lines to taking money meant to help injured TSA officers, the Trump administration’s obsession with attacking immigrants could soon be felt more immediately by folks all over the country.
