White House declares war on Eagles for not wanting photo op with Trump

Trump’s White House is apparently outraged that this year’s Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, aren’t interested in meeting Trump for a photo op.

After several members of the team decided to pass on the invitation, the White House issued an incredibly bizarre statement Monday night that Trump was revoking his invitation to the entire team because of their insufficient respect for the national anthem.

But that act of unpresidential pettiness was not enough to soothe what Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney rightly called Trump’s “fragile” ego.

So now White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has also released a statement trashing the team.

“The White House, despite sensing a lack of good faith, nonetheless attempted to work with the Eagles over the weekend to change the event format that could accommodate a smaller group of players,” Sanders said.

However, the White House apparently decided the team’s offer “to send only a tiny handful of representatives” was insufficient. As the Philadelphia mayor also noted, Trump is “afraid of the embarrassment of throwing a party to which no one wants to attend.”

So the White House is all-out trashing the team now.

“The vast majority of the Eagles team decided to abandon their fans,” Sanders said in her statement, as if not wanting to pose with the hate-spewing Trump is the same thing as not appreciating their fans.

The entire spectacle is an embarrassment to Trump, who cannot even manage the basic task of hosting a victorious professional sports team at the White House without turning it into a PR disaster and another tiresome reminder of just how unpresidential he is.

So instead of taking a few minutes to smile and shake hands with this year’s Super Bowl champions, Trump is holding a ridiculous “celebration of the American flag” and the national anthem.

It isn’t normal for a president of the United States to struggle so mightily to get people to want to pose for a picture with him. But Trump is in no way normal. And if he thought it was hard to get people interested in a photo op with him before, this petulant attack isn’t likely to help.
