Devin Nunes dismisses Mueller investigation as 'Russia Kool-aid'

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) is responding to the latest bombshell developments in the Mueller investigation by dismissing the probe as “Russia Kool-aid,” and vowing to step up his propaganda campaign ahead of the midterms.

Nunes has spent more than a year undermining and interfering with the Russia investigation, and in an interview on this week’s edition of Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo, he rolled out a new line of attack.

Nunes told host Maria Bartiromo that he will continue to press for the release of classified documents related to the Russia investigation because he believes that there are “many Americans who are living in an alternative universe, who have drank this Russia Kool-Aid.”

He made the reference an additional three times in the interview, telling Bartiromo that she’d be “shocked at the number of Americans who have drank the Russia Kool-Aid,” that he wanted to reveal “just how sick this Russia Kool-Aid that’s been poured upon the American people,” and that the media is “focused on drinking the Russian Kool-Aid.”

“Drinking the Kool-aid” is a reference to the method by which cult leader Jim Jones carried out a mass murder-suicide in 1978, by convincing or forcing them to drink poisoned beverages. The phrase has become an idiom for blind followership.

But if anyone is blind, it’s Nunes, whose dismissal of the Mueller investigation comes on the heels of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s plea deal, which included a 17-page agreement to cooperate with Mueller’s investigation.

The Manafort deal is just the latest in a long series of major triumphs for the Mueller investigation, which has now produced 32 indictments and guilty pleas from six people, including four former Trump officials.

And if anyone is living in an “alternative universe,” it is those who still listen to Devin Nunes. Last year, Nunes colluded with the White House to fabricate allegations of improper “unmasking” of Trump associates in intelligence reports in order to bolster Trump’s lie that President Obama “wiretapped” Trump Tower.

As the Russia probe progressed, Nunes and the Republicans spent several weeks in January hyping a memo about a FISA application that was supposed to contain bombshell revelations about the FBI being biased against Trump. When the memo was finally released, it was an embarrassing failure that actually debunked GOP attacks on the Russia probe.

In fact, every bit of material that Nunes has pushed to have released has wound up showing even more conclusively that his attacks on the Russia investigation were all lies.

That hasn’t stopped Nunes from pushing for more documents to be declassified — even at the expense of national security — or using the Department of Justice’s refusal to compromise national security as a pretext to attack, and even try to impeach, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

And it was Nunes who was caught on tape admitting that he and the Republicans are waiting to impeach Rosenstein until after Judge Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed.

Instead of paying attention to the needs of the constituents he’s been ignoring for years, Devin Nunes clearly plans to spend the next two months repeating lies and propaganda about the Russia investigation. But the truth will still be there in November.
