GOP senator threatens his bank for not supporting Trump's detention centers

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) expressed dismay that Bank of America will no longer do business with companies connected to Trump’s child detention centers near the southern border.

“I may have to change banks,” Cornyn wrote Thursday afternoon, linking to a report about the bank from his Twitter account.

Bank of America announced on Wednesday that it would sever its connection to companies operating detention centers.

“Lacking further legal and policy clarity, and in recognition of the concerns of our employees and stakeholders in the communities we serve, it is our intention to exit these relationships,” a spokesperson told CNN.

Children are being held in the centers, often in substandard conditions lacking proper food or hygiene, thanks to Trump’s anti-immigrant policies.

Six children have died in detention centers since September.

Despite the abject cruelty of the situation — or perhaps because of it — Trump has received support from his fellow Republicans, like Cornyn. The party has adopted an anti-immigrant, anti-Latino message that has backfired politically.

Cornyn admitted earlier in the year that he could be “in trouble” before his reelection bid in 2020. He apparently thinks that sneering at children in dire straits won’t hurt him.
