Lindsey Graham openly advises Don Jr. to obstruct justice

So much for protecting the rule of law.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican turned Trump sycophant, went on Fox News to advise first son Donald Trump Jr. to simply ignore a legally binding congressional subpoena.

Graham gave no legal basis for ignoring the subpoena. Graham simply thinks Trump Jr. shouldn’t be held accountable for the apparent lies Trump Jr. told Congress, which would amount to a federal crime.

“If I were Donald Trump Jr.’s lawyer, I would tell him, you don’t need to go back into this environment anymore,” Graham said Sunday morning on Fox News. “You’ve been there for hours and hours, and nothing being alleged here changes the outcome of the Mueller investigation.”

“I would call it a day,” Graham added.

The subpoena Graham told Trump Jr. to ignore was issued by a fellow Republican senator. It requires Trump Jr. to return to the Senate Intelligence Committee to answer questions about apparent lies Trump Jr. made to the committee on his knowledge of the Trump Organization’s negotiations for a Trump Tower in Moscow. Lying to Congress is a crime, one that landed former Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen in prison.

Republicans have made awful arguments about why Trump Jr. shouldn’t be subjected to the subpoena, most of which boil down to their belief that the president’s son is simply above the laws that every other person in this country are subjected to.

Of course, no legitimate lawyer would tell a client to ignore a legally binding subpoena simply because they think it’s unfair. In fact, a lawyer who knowingly tells their client to break the law would likely be subject to punishment by the courts.

Graham, who has a law degree and is a Senator who drafts laws he’s advising the president’s son to willfully ignore, should know that.

But fealty to Trump has apparently overtaken Graham’s oath to “support and defend the Constitution.”
