Trump surrenders his Twitter account to Nancy Pelosi
A day after caving to Democrats on a deal for hurricane relief, Donald Trump has apparently also turned over the keys to his highly valued Twitter account to Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Seemingly out of nowhere, Trump tweeted, “For all of those (DACA) that are concerned about your status during the 6 month period, you have […]
Seemingly out of nowhere, Trump tweeted, “For all of those (DACA) that are concerned about your status during the 6 month period, you have nothing to worry about – No action!”
The tweet, sent out to Trump’s 37.8 million followers and covered by every media outlet, was the brainchild of the House minority leader. According to Capitol Hill reporters, Pelosi spoke to Trump and “asked him” to send out the tweet in order to reassure DREAMers.
And he did just as she asked.
As Associated Press congressional reporter Erica Werner noted, the surrender of Trump’s account to Democrats is shocking and unusual.
“This is getting crazy,” she said. “McConnell repeatedly asks Trump to stop tweeting, Pelosi gets a tweet she wants.”
At a press conference Wednesday, Pelosi explained how she forced Trump to do her bidding.
PELOSI: You know I’m not famous for going into details of conversations with presidents, we did talk about some other issues, but because he then put out the tweet – and I was reporting to my colleagues: This is what I asked the president to do and boom, boom, boom, the tweet appeared. So, that was good.
Democrats were reportedly so pleased with their accomplishment that Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell “read it loud from her iPad” during a meeting of House Democratic leadership.
Trump’s capitulations to Democrats come as his administration continues to flatline in public opinion polling, coupled with widespread condemnation of his announcement on DACA and the thousands of lives that would be impacted if Congress is unwilling to act.
Former Trump strategist and head of Breitbart Steve Bannon told CBS that “the guys on the far right, the guys on the conservative side, are not happy” about Trump’s vacillating on undocumented immigrants.
They are likely to be even angrier with Nancy Pelosi, whom they hate, for achieving what none of Trump’s handlers have been able to do — controlling Trump’s tweets.
