GOP senator calls Trump 'idiotic' for saying windmills cause cancer

Trump has a long-documented hatred for windmills — ever since “ugly” wind turbines were set up near his failing golf property in Scotland.

But he took his hatred for the clean power source to a patently absurd extreme on Tuesday night, when he claimed that the “noise” from windmills cause cancer — a claim that’s not just totally false, but also downright delusional.

But while the White House is sticking by Trump’s insane comment, at least one GOP senator is calling Trump out for the off-the-wall assertion.

“[Trump’s] comments on wind energy — not only as a president but when he was a candidate — were, first of all, idiotic,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) told reporters on a Wednesday call, according to the Des Moines Register.

Grassley then added, speaking in the third person, that Trump’s comments didn’t “show much respect for Chuck Grassley as the grandfather of the wind energy tax credit.”

Of course, other Republicans are defending Trump. Grassley’s fellow Iowan Kim Reynolds, the state’s GOP governor, refused to dismiss Trump’s baseless comment offhand.

“That’s not my place,” Reynolds told reporters, when asked if she thinks Trump’s “windmills cause cancer” theory is correct.

“You know how those things change,” Reynolds continued. “One year, coffee’s good for you. The next year, coffee causes cancer.”

Yes, she actually said that.

This is, of course, not the only incorrect or irresponsible claim Trump has made about science or technology. He said exercise actually shortens your lifespan, has called climate change a “hoax,” and even promoted dangerous anti-vaccine conspiracies.

But sometimes his comments are too dumb even for Republicans to defend.
