Trump hypes bogus 'sting' video from disgraced right-wing operative
The now-defunct Trump Foundation funneled tens of thousands to fund James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas.
After a horrific video showing a figure representing Donald Trump gallantly murdering members of the media and the Black Lives Matter movement was shown at a pro-Trump event at one of his resorts, the White House claimed on Monday that he had not seen the video but soon would. A day later, Trump has still not addressed the matter.
But, among the dozens of unrelated topics he has tweeted about since the rally, he did take time to hype altogether different videos: a fake CNN “sting” by a discredited right-wing organization he has helped bankroll.
Monday evening, Trump advertised a series of heavily edited “undercover videos” by Project Veritas, a right-wing group known for its dishonest and misleading videos that are selectively edited to “expose” progressives and the traditional media. The organization’s founder and president is James O’Keefe, a convicted criminal who was charged after he tried to break into the office of then-Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) in 2010 to tamper with her phones.
Trump tweeted that the group’s latest videos highlight CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker’s “Campaign to Destroy Trump” and the networks “BIAS!” He suggested that this alleged bias might be the basis for a “good, or even great, lawsuit.”
But according to The Wrap, CNN has already debunked these latest videos. While they claim to be revealing secretly filmed footage by a CNN “whistleblower,” the cable network noted that zero of the people purportedly exposed in the videos were actually CNN journalists. The so-called “CNN insider” who made the videos was a freelance satellite truck operator whose company contracted with the network.
But it is little surprise that Trump wanted to promote these dishonest videos. According to tax filings, the Trump Foundation gave at least $20,000 in recent years to Project Veritas to help support its widely debunked propaganda efforts.
