Florida congressman thinks he can serve Trump better in Alabama

Talk about carpetbagging.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) — one of Trump’s biggest fans and defenders on Capitol Hill — may move across state lines from Florida to Alabama to run for Senate, the Hill newspaper reported on Thursday.

Gaetz reportedly told his colleagues he’s thinking of running in Alabama — just over the state line from his Florida Panhandle House seat.

And an unnamed GOP lawmaker who knows Gaetz told the Hill that Trump would “probably” endorse Gaetz if he ran.

It’s no wonder Trump would probably back Gaetz’s run.

Gaetz told BuzzFeed last week that he feels like purpose in the House is to protect Trump from investigations that could expose Trump for the fraudster he is.

“I don’t know how I’d fit into this place in the absence of the president,” Gaetz told BuzzFeed, adding, “I wake up every day and I do what I can to expose what I believe is an intractable bias among the people who are investigating the president.”

Gaetz even led a charge to try and oust now-former Speaker Paul Ryan from his leadership spot because he thought Ryan wasn’t a big enough Trump crony.

But in defending Trump, Gaetz has gotten himself into trouble.

Ahead of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s testimony before Congress in February, Gaetz tweeted a threat at Cohen that could hand landed him in legal trouble.

“Hey @MichaelCohen212 – Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot…” Gaetz tweeted at the time.

For now, Gaetz is denying that he’s going to carpetbag over to Alabama to seek a Senate seat that would give him a bigger platform from which to defend the lawless president.

“I had a few people make mention to me that Alabama has a very short residency requirement but it’s not something I’ve looked at myself,” Gaetz told the Hill. “I think that my most likely path would be to seek reelection in the House.”

However if Gaetz does choose to run for Senate in Alabama, he’d face a GOP primary against Rep. Bradley Byrne, a fellow Republican House member who currently represents Alabama, unlike Gaetz.

And the winner of the GOP primary would face off with Democratic Sen. Doug Jones, who defeated accused pedophile Roy Moore in a special election in 2017.

Yet it’s unclear why Gaetz would run for House or Senate at all, given what he told BuzzFeed last week.

“This place sucks,” Gaetz said, referring to Congress.
