Alex Jones says he's the one behind Trump's war on Google
Informal Trump adviser Alex Jones said he’s the one who got Trump to promote a conspiracy theory alleging that Google is censoring conservatives.
Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones says he’s advising Trump on the baseless conspiracy theory alleging Google search results are skewed against conservatives.
In a video posted to Twitter, Jones said, “We advise the president, we’ve got all the documents, we’ve got the proof, other people are scared to tell him what’s going on.”
Trump has been whining that Google searches for “Trump news” are turning up results that paint him in a negative light.
He tweeted, “Google search results for ‘Trump News’ shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD.”
Trump’s assertion is false: There is no mechanism rigging Google results against Trump.
Trump has often promoted absurd conspiracy theories, most notably that President Barack Obama did not have a valid birth certificate.
Lately Jones has been removed from major social media networks like Facebook and YouTube for promoting and creating harmful conspiracy theories.
Jones falsely alleged that the Sandy Hook School massacre was a hoax, which led to the parents of children who were killed being harassed by Jones fans. Jones is currently being sued by some of those parents.
Jones is also one of the major proponents of the absurd conspiracy blaming the U.S. government for perpetrating the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Despite these stances, or perhaps because of them, there has been an ongoing relationship between Trump and Jones for years. In an appearance on his online show, Trump praised Jones for his “amazing” reputation.
Jones has said that he has kept in contact with Trump since he became president.
Previously, Jones has said that he wants Trump to promote his conspiracies about supposed censorship of conservatives on social media.
Trump has done just that, forwarding the debunked idea that a “shadow ban” of conservatives is in place on Twitter.
Trump is just fine using the presidential bully pulpit to amplify Jones’ conspiracies and delusions.
