Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon just sent two Breitbart News ‘reporters’ to Alabama to launch a vicious smear campaign against the women who came forward this week to accuse GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore of sexually abusing them as teenagers.

Breitbart has already spent the past several days running interference for Moore after the Washington Post published an explosive report detailing allegations that the Bannon-backed candidate sexually abused a 14-year-old girl and sought inappropriate relationships with multiple other teenage girls when he was in his early 30s.

Not satisfied with simply justifying pedophilia, Bannon is now taking things to the next level.

According to Axios, which first reported the news, Bannon sent Breitbart stooges Matt Boyle and Aaron Klein to Alabama with the explicit purpose of discrediting Moore’s accusers by poking holes in their stories.

The duo immediately seized on what they claim is an inconsistency in one accuser’s account of being sexually abused by Moore.

Leigh Corfman told the Washington Post that Moore molested her when she was just 14 years old. In telling her story, Corfman mentioned that she had spoken to Moore on a phone in her room — a detail that Corfman’s mother was unable to confirm to Breitbart.

According to Boyle and Klein, the unconfirmed presence of a telephone in Corfman’s room means her entire story should be dismissed, despite the fact that Corfman’s mother told them the family’s phone could have “easily” been used in her daughter’s bedroom.

Corfman’s mother also said she believes her daughter’s allegations that Moore sexually abused her.

“It’s quite a head-scratcher as to why Breitbart thinks this bedroom phone detail matters,” wrote Axios’ Jonathan Swan. “But the fact Breitbart is running stories like this shows the extremes to which it may go to discredit Moore’s accusers.”

Furthermore, based on Moore’s recent statements, it appears that he may be a willing participant in the smear campaign. Just a day ago, Moore said there were ongoing “investigations” looking into the motivations behind the accusations, and promised “revelations” would be coming in the next few days.

Bannon campaigned hard for Moore and has gone on the attack since the accusations against him were published. In an interview with Bloomberg on Friday, Bannon said the allegations were intended “to destroy a man’s life.”

Given that Bannon is so heavily invested in Moore, it’s not exactly surprising that he would use Breitbart to launch a smear campaign against the women who came forward with the allegations.

What is surprising, however, is that Boyle and Klein are willing to risk their reputations to defend a man who has already publicly admitted to dating “a lot of young ladies.”
