Trump attacks evangelical magazine calling for his removal for 'grossly immoral character'

Donald Trump on Friday morning lashed out at an evangelical magazine that called for his removal from office, disparaging the publication as a “far left magazine” that “has been doing poorly.”

The magazine, Christianity Today — which was launched by evangelical icon Billy Graham — wrote that Trump “abused his authority for personal gain and betrayed his constitutional oath” and should be removed from office.

“Christianity Today, knows nothing about reading a perfect transcript of a routine phone call and would rather have a Radical Left nonbeliever, who wants to take your religion & your guns, than Donald Trump as your President,” Trump tweeted, adding that “No President has done more for the Evangelical community” then he has.

It’s worth noting that Trump is not a devout Christian, and does not regularly attend church. He infamously mispronounced a book of the Bible during a 2016 campaign speech at the evangelical Liberty University. And he’s criticized people who are devout, such as when he doubted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s claim that she prays for Trump. (Pelosi is a devout Catholic.)

Christianity Today, however, cautioned evangelicals against supporting Trump for “political expediency,” saying that he is a “leader of such grossly immoral character.”

“To the many evangelicals who continue to support Mr. Trump in spite of his blackened moral record, we might say this: Remember who you are and whom you serve,” the magazine wrote. “Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency.”

Trump has been in a fit of rage since the House impeached him on Wednesday, branding him with a stain only two other presidents in history have on their record.

The New York Times reported that ahead of the vote, Trump and some of his closest White House advisers convinced themselves that the House wouldn’t follow through with impeaching him, believing — falsely — that Pelosi didn’t have the votes for vote to pass.

Trump is especially enraged that Pelosi is now holding back the articles of impeachment until the Senate agrees to a fair trial — preventing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from quickly acquitting Trump in a rigged trial that calls no witnesses.
