Even a Fox News host thinks Trump's impeachment defense is garbage
Trump’s ridiculous argument this week for why he shouldn’t be impeached was a bridge too far for Fox News host Neil Cavuto.
Talk of Trump being impeached picked up steam this week, but his defense has even a usually supportive Fox News host rolling his eyes.
In the span of one afternoon, Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, was convicted on eight counts of fraud, and his personal fixer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to several crimes in which he implicated Trump.
So Trump turned to his friends at Fox to defend himself — and issue a thinly veiled threat if he were to be impeached.
“If I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash, I think everybody would be very poor,” he said in the softball interview with Fox’s Ainsley Earhardt. “You would see numbers that you wouldn’t believe.”
Earhardt didn’t bother to challenge Trump’s audacious claim, but Neil Cavuto, host of “Your World” on Fox News, which covers financial news from a right-wing point of view, recorded a video commentary on his show criticizing Trump for his hubristic statement.

Noting that Trump’s argument was essentially that he shouldn’t be impeached if the economy is thriving, Cavuto said, “Good times should never be used to ignore bad things.”
“You don’t prevent a constitutional crisis by threatening a financial one. Mr. President, you guarantee both when your very actions and words create that crisis or make people think — think — that you’re hiding one.”
Cavuto then went on to note how Trump had lied about his knowledge of the decision to arrange payouts to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal to hide their stories. Cavuto highlighted Trump’s lies about the meeting with a Russian operative at Trump Tower during the campaign.
“Lots of stuff like that just keeps popping up here,” Cavuto said as he recited a series of Trump lies and deceptions large and small.
“None of these make the market any less impressive, maybe just the guy overseeing it all,” he said. “Mr. President, you’re that guy.”
Anger at his critics is not a reason to “hold this economic boom you hold so dear hostage,” he continued.
“It cheapens your argument and it cheapens this country,” he said.
Addressing Trump, he said, “You are so darned focused on promoting a financial boom that you failed to see that you are the one creating this moral bust.”
Trump relies on Fox News to be a constant amplifier for his nonsense and lies. But for a moment at least one conservative host on the network made his audience aware of just how off the rails Trump has gone.
