GOP prepares to destroy victim of assault to put Kavanaugh on SCOTUS

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will devote pitifully little time to the very serious allegations that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh tried to rape a girl in high school.

Republicans in charge of the committee have decided that only Kavanaugh and his first accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, should be heard. They will not be calling any other witnesses related to Ford’s allegation, even though Ford has named another man, Mike Judge, who she says was present when Kavanaugh tried to rape her.

“We’ve got two people involved, and two people ought to be able to present their stories, and then we’ll have to be the jury,” said committee chairman Chuck Grassley last week, even though more than two people were involved in the incident.

It was clear then that Republicans were setting up a sham of a hearing. That has not changed, even as more women have come forward to publicly accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

The GOP doesn’t want to hear from those women either. They refused to even join a phone call with Deborah Ramirez, who says Kavanaugh waved his penis in her face when they were both students at Yale.

Republicans want to get the hearing over with as quickly as possible so they can rush a vote to put Kavanagh on the Supreme Court immediately. And nothing — not even overwhelming and undeniable evidence that Kavanaugh is in fact an attempted rapist — will change their minds.

They have said as much.

“If that was true, I think it would be hard for senators to not consider who the judge is today,” Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch said last week. “That’s the issue. Is this judge a really good man? And he is. And by any measure he is.”

That isn’t true either. Former classmates of Kavanaugh’s have come forward to say that Kavanaugh’s depiction of himself as a virginal choir boy who spent his youth going to church and studying is simply not true.

“Brett was a sloppy drunk, and I know because I drank with him,” former Kavanaugh classmate Liz Swisher told The Washington Post.

“He’s trying to paint himself as some kind of choir boy,” another former classmate said. “You can’t lie your way onto the Supreme Court.”

Kavanaugh’s attorneys released his calendars from 1982, supposedly to exonerate him by showing that nothing on the calendar specifies a party where he got “stumbling drunk,” as Ford described his behavior, and tried to rape her.

Those calendars hardly prove Kavanaugh is innocent of the serious accusations. They merely raise more questions for him, as well as for Judge — except senators won’t be asking Judge any of those questions.

The hearing is a sham, designed to smear and undermine Ford, who has risked her life and the safety of her family by coming forward. In a transparent attempt to deflect accusations of sexism — there are no women Republicans on the committee — the men actually hired a woman to do their questioning for them.

In her prepared opening remarks, Ford says she is “terrified.” Given the enormous smear campaign against her, and the clear message from Republicans that nothing she can say will change their minds, can anyone blame her?
