Trump's homeland security chief blatantly lies about family separation

As outrage over the Trump administration’s policy of ripping children away from their parents exploded this weekend, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen issued a desperate lie on behalf of that repugnant policy.

On Sunday evening, Nielsen fired off a series of defensive tweets about the cruel Trump administration policy of separating families that concluded with her announcing, “We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period.”

But Nielsen has acknowledged the policy in the past — even to a Senate Homeland Security and Immigration Committee hearing just a few weeks ago.

Nielsen’s lie followed first lady Melania Trump’s statement that appeared to condemn the policy, while calling on “both sides” to end the moral horror that Trump alone enacted.

Hours later, the Washington Post published a searing op-ed by Republican former first lady Laura Bush, in which she called Trump’s policy “cruel” and “immoral.”

Despite Trump’s lies, everyone knows that this policy was his doing, and that he can just as quickly undo it. The question now is, who will step up and make him?
