Hundreds of Florida students are standing with Parkland for gun control

The Parkland kids have inspired a powerful movement.

Around 50 Polk County High School students participated in a walk-out from school on Tuesday morning, February 20, 2018. The students, including senior Emily Hogan, center, protested the epidemic of mass shootings in American schools, speaking in front of the school's sign along Hwy. 108 in Columbus as supporters cheered them on.
Students protest in solidarity with Douglas High.

Students across the state of Florida and elsewhere aren’t waiting to show their solidarity with the survivors and victims from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

On Tuesday, students from at least four other schools staged actions in support of gun control.

Up to a thousand students from West Boca High School made national news when they walked out of class Tuesday, and trekked 11 miles to Stoneman Douglas.

Students at McArthur High School in Hollywood, Florida, staged a walkout as well, while kids at Fort Lauderdale High School protested gun violence Tuesday morning even after it began to rain.

And in North Carolina, students at Githens Middle School and South Point High School also staged walkouts to protest gun violence.

The preceding Monday, 100 students joined a walkout to protest gun violence at Olympic Heights Community High School in Boca Raton.

All of these protests have occurred in advance of the planned March for Our Lives, and national walkouts on Feb. 21, March 14, and April 20.

The survivors of last week’s mass shooting immediately began to lead a powerful resistance to gun violence, and their example has already inspired many others. In addition to a gut-wrenching protest in front of the White House Monday, students across the nation have been showing solidarity and demanding change.

The young but already powerful movement is providing hope that it might finally break the deadly grip the NRA has had on our country.
