"I cannot sit back." Veteran Texas journalist joins House race to defeat Trump Republican

Texas’s 32nd Congressional District, located in Dallas, is not nearly as conservative as it used to be. Hillary Clinton carried it by 2 points. Despite this, Sessions continues to represent the district as a relentless GOP partisan, voting with Trump 96 percent of the time. He is also an advocate for Trump’s border wall, even though punishing immigrants would hurt the Texas economy.

One Dallas Democrat, longtime investigative reporter Brett Shipp, has had enough. Shipp, who has worked at local station WFAA-TV since 1995 and has won three Peabody Awards, is resigning to run for Sessions’ House seat, according to the Dallas Morning News.

“I absolutely have reached my threshold of tolerance for negative discourse, toxic politics and the lack of civility. I’ve had enough,” Shipp said. “I cannot sit back and do nothing.”

Shipp is not alone. In fact, he is entering a crowded primary.

Other Democrats vying to challenge Sessions include Ed Meier, a former Hillary Clinton adviser; Colin Allred, a lawyer who worked in the Department of Housing and Urban Development; attorney George Rodriguez; and and Lilian Salerno, who served as Deputy Undersecretary for Rural Development.

The sheer size of the field is a testament to the fact that Shipp is not the only one who is angry. Dallas residents are sick and tired of Trump — and they’re rallying to elect a representative who will not sell them out for the sake of party.

Rejecting Trump’s vision of America means rejecting the GOP in Congress. In Texas’s 32nd District, that is beginning to happen.
