Impeachment watch: Trump will face 2 articles of impeachment
Democrats announced the articles of impeachment Tuesday morning at a news conference.
Donald Trump will face two articles of impeachment: One for abusing the power of the presidency and the other for obstructing justice, according to multiple news reports.
House Democrats announced the articles of impeachment Tuesday morning at a news conference on Capitol Hill.
According to Politico, the House Judiciary Committee will vote to approve the articles of impeachment on Thursday, with a vote before the full House to take place next week, before lawmakers leave Washington, D.C., for the holiday recess. This will make Trump only the third president in history to be impeached.
The announcement that Trump will face the articles of impeachment comes a day after the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing to discuss the evidence gathered in the three-month-long investigation into Trump’s attempt to force Ukraine into investigating his political rivals.
Republicans on the committee constantly disrupted the hearing with parliamentary requests and outbursts, while at the same time misconstruing or outright lying about the evidence against Trump.
Here’s what else is happening in impeachment news:
- Without a hint of irony, PATRIOT Act author Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) accused House Democrats of “abuse of power” for releasing phone records that show Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) in communication with key witnesses in the impeachment investigation. The PATRIOT Act made it easier for the government to spy on American citizens by monitoring their communications.
- The Senate plans to begin an impeachment trial against Trump in January, after the holiday recess, according to Politico.
