Impeachment watch: Trump could be banned from elected office for life
The articles of impeachment Trump faces would prohibit him from ever seeking public office again.
The articles of impeachment House Democrats released on Tuesday include a provision that would ban Donald Trump from ever holding public office.
According to the text of the impeachment articles, Trump’s conduct “warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States.”
Trump faces two articles of impeachment: one for abuse of power and a second for obstructing justice.
The House Judiciary Committee will begin marking up the articles of impeachment — allowing members to edit the text of legislation before it is voted out of committee — on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. EST.
A vote on the impeachment articles will take place before the full House before lawmakers leave town next week for the holidays.
Here’s what else is happening in impeachment news:
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell officially announced that the Senate will not begin an impeachment trial against Trump until after the chamber returns to Washington, D.C., in the new year.
- Trump has demanded that an impeachment trial include testimony from Hunter Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden who Trump has demanded an investigation of. But Senate Republicans do not plan to call Hunter Biden as a witness, according to the Washington Examiner. In fact, the Examiner reported that Republicans may not call any witnesses at all in the trial against Trump.
- Half of Americans approve of impeaching Trump, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll. The 50% of Americans who support impeaching Trump is larger than the 42% who don’t want Trump to be impeached. This comes as Trump and Republicans claim impeachment is not popular.
