Independent senator: Sessions not "very interested" in "most serious attack" since 9/11

Neither does Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to his own recent testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Angus King, the independent senator from Maine, asked Sessions about his understanding of Russia’s election meddling, and Sessions admitted he had never sought any briefings or asked any questions. And that lack of concern from the Trump administration has King deeply concerned for the country, as he said in an interview on MSNBC:

KING: The other thing that was troubling, though, that didn’t get as much publicity, I asked him, “Did you ever get a briefing on what the Russians did? Did you seek a briefing? Did you ask about it?” And he said, “No, I only know what I read in the papers.”

This is the most serious attack on the United States since September 11th, and the chief law enforcement officer doesn’t seem very interested in it. And Director Comey said he had nine conversations with the president. He never asked about, you know, what’s your evidence, how do you know what happened, how did they do it, how do we prevent it? I find that pretty disturbing question about something that’s really very serious and is going to be serious in the coming years.

Sessions’s admission is eerily similar to what we learned from former FBI Director James Comey, who testified earlier this month about his disturbing conversations with Trump. Asked by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) whether Trump showed “any concern or interest or curiosity about what the Russians were doing,” Comey responded, “I don’t remember any conversations with the president about the Russia election interference.”

It appears Trump has shown no interest in how a foreign government sought to influence our election, and now, according to attorney general’s own testimony, he has not either.

Comey also warned that the Russians are “coming after America.” As other former and current members of the intelligence community have similarly warned, the 2016 election was only the beginning.

If the president of the United States and the nation’s chief law enforcement do not care to know what happened before, we should be very worried about what will happen the next time Russia tries to hack our elections. Because it is going to happen — and this administration is doing nothing to stop it.
