Joni Ernst denies McConnell is blocking election security and calls it 'misinformation'
Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) acted unaware that the leader of her own party blocked election security bills in the Senate.
At a town hall event over the weekend, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) acted unaware that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was actively working to block election security bills from passing the Senate.
A constituent told Ernst that he was “baffled by McConnell’s efforts lately” to relentlessly block election security bills passed by the House but stalled in the Senate. To clarify, Someone in the said that McConnell blocked a bill to “go back to paper [ballots].”
“Well, I don’t know that he blocked a bill on that,” Ernst replied.
In fact, McConnell did block a bill on that very subject. On July 25, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer asked for unanimous consent for the Senate to pass the Securing America’s Federal Elections Act, which would provide $600 million in election assistance and require paper ballot backups.
McConnell, from the floor of the Senate, called it a “highly partisan bill” before blocking the motion.
Another audience member interjected and brought up another bill that would “stop foreign people from … helping Trump” in the next election.
At this point, Ernst dismissed the comment entirely, claiming, “There’s a lot of misinformation, I think, that exists out there.”
Once again, Ernst is the one guilty of peddling misinformation.
On the same day McConnell blocked the Securing America’s Federal Elections Act, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) attempted to pass a bill requiring campaigns to notify the FBI if they were approached by agents of a foreign government with help, addressing the very concern Ernst’s constituent brought up, regarding foreign agents helping Trump.
That measure was also blocked by McConnell.
While her constituents seem better informed about what’s happening in the Senate than Ernst, it is hard to imagine she would disagree with McConnell. Ernst shows incredible loyalty to McConnell, voting the way he did 97% of the time this year, according to ProPublica.
Ernst spent her town hall falsely accusing her constituents of spreading misinformation when it was Ernst herself who refused to acknowledge the truth.
