Kris Kobach announces Senate bid after humiliating gubernatorial loss in 2018
The Kansas Republican who ran Trump’s failed ‘voter fraud’ commission and suffered an embarrassing blow in 2018 now has his eyes on the Senate.
After a series of deeply embarrassing career setbacks, anti-immigrant crusader, voter suppression advocate, and top Trump defender Kris Kobach is back for more humiliation, filing paperwork on Monday to run for Senate in Kansas.
Kobach’s bid comes after an abysmal 2018, in which he lost a gubernatorial bid in otherwise heavily Republican state and was held in contempt by a federal judge for refusing to follow orders after being caught suppressing votes
Just recently, a group Kobach provided legal counsel to was ordered to stop building a segment of Trump’s border wall with private funds, after the group failed to get the necessary permits — yet another fail for Kobach and his legal skills.
Kobach also presided over Trump’s failed “voter fraud” commission, which was disbanded after being plagued by mismanagement and the fact that there was no voter fraud in 2016 to find.
Given Kobach’s series of failures, national Republicans do not want him running for Senate in Kansas — which will have an open Senate contest as longtime GOP Sen. Pat Roberts is retiring. Republicans fear that Kobach is uniquely suited to lose a statewide race to a Democrat, despite Kansas’ otherwise strong Republican roots.
In fact, Republicans are so worried about a Kobach bid that GOP groups are actually prepared to run a campaign against him in the primary.
They have good reason.
Kobach has already has had an embarrassing moment before he officially announced his run, initially filing the required paperwork for the contest with his first name misspelled. The initial filing was under Chris Kobach, instead of his actual name, Kris Kobach.
That’s not exactly an auspicious start for the Republican hopeful.
Kobach is expected to make an official announcement about his plans for the Kansas Senate race Monday afternoon, according to the Kansas City Star.
