GOP strategist destroys John Kelly’s attack on immigrants

Trump’s chief of staff John Kelly is known to be no friend to immigrants. And when he trashed them again this week, he earned a strong rebuke from former Bush administration official Matthew Dowd.

In an interview with NPR, Kelly said undocumented immigrants are “not people that would easily assimilate into the United States, into our modern society.” He derided them as “rural people” who “don’t speak English” and “don’t have skills.”

On Sunday morning’s “This Week,” host Martha Raddatz asked Dowd for his reaction to Kelly’s remarks.

“I think it’s just totally outrageous,” Dowd said. “Not only outrageous just from a general standpoint, but for somebody whose last name is Kelly, somebody whose last name is Dowd, whose ancestors came here without any education, with a very lacking ability to assimilate, as he calls it, in language — along with almost every other culture in our country.”

And he noted the disturbing historical connotation of Kelly’s comments.

“The same thing was said after slavery. ‘They’re not going to be able to assimilate, why are we doing this, what’s happening,’ all this.”

Dowd also connected Kelly’s rant to White House aide Kelly Sadler’s attack on Sen. John McCain.

“John Kelly represents a culture in the White House that views the world in this way. And along with those comments, it says we’re going to say and do anything — we’re not going to apologize.”

Even more disgusting is the fact that Kelly’s comments were given as justification for the policy of deliberately separating children from their parents at the border.

Kelly is a documented liar and racist who recently called undocumented Dreamers “too lazy to get off their asses” and file for protected status. His latest comments come amid reports that Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen threatened to resign after Trump berated her for not being cruel enough to immigrants.

Kelly’s words are ugly, but this administration’s actions are even uglier.
