When House Democrats met to discuss Donald Trump’s moves toward gutting the consumer protections and financial regulations of the Dodd-Frank Act, Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had strong messages for Trump.

When Waters was asked about her recent comments, wherein she stated that her “greatest desire” is to lead Trump “right into impeachment,” she continued not to pull any punches, and to searingly declare that Trump is “doing it himself”:

REPORTER: Last week, you said your greatest desire is to lead Donald Trump right into impeachment. I’m wondering why is it appropriate to call for the impeachment of the president less than a month after taking office?

WATERS: I have not called for the impeachment yet. He’s doing it himself. Let me just say that the statement I made was a statement in response to questions and pleas that I’m getting from many citizens across this country: ‘What are we going to do?’ How can a president, who is acting in the manner that he’s acting, whether he’s talking about the travel ban, the way that he’s targeting Muslims, or whether he’s talking about his relationship to Putin and the Kremlin, and knowing that they have hacked our DCCC and DNC, and knowing that he is responsible for supplying the bombs that killed innocent children and families in Aleppo. And the fact that he is wrapping his arms around Putin while Putin is continuing to advance into Korea [sic].

I think he is leading himself into that kind of position where folks will begin to ask ‘What are we going to do?’ And the answer’s going to be, eventually, we’ve got to do something about him. We cannot continue to have a president who is acting in this manner. It is dangerous to the United States of America.

Moreover, Waters later said in a video posted on her Twitter account that Trump “has done enough in a short period of time for questions to be raised about whether or not he’s acting in the best interests of this country.”

Waters was not alone in going after Trump during the press conference. Pelosi used her to time to remind Americans what Trump had said about Wall Street during his campaign:

President Trump and his billionaire cabinet, and his advisers in his own office who spring from Wall Street, are putting forth a Wall Street First policy at the expense of the American people.

The public has to know, they want to take us right back to that place, by the person who went out there and campaigned against Wall Street. It was just a hoax, just a hoax. Because here he comes back and says we’re going to overturn every protection that is there for you.

Trump had campaigned on taking America back from Wall Street and getting money back into the pockets of taxpayers. But, as Pelosi asserted, those promises have turned out to be empty: His cabinet (the wealthiest cabinet in presidential history) is stacked with people plucked from Wall Street.

Trump has, as Waters said on Morning Joe, “brought Wall Street right into the White House.”

Pelosi, Waters, and other Democrats in Congress are resisting him at every turn.
