Mexico has learned to ignore Trump whenever he flips out and threatens them

The Mexican government does not take Trump seriously.

At least, according to a new report on Wednesday from the Daily Beast that said Mexico ignored Trump’s rantings and ravings and threats of tariffs over the past few weeks, instead choosing to go to Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to negotiate on immigration.

According to the Daily Beast’s report, Kushner served as a “source of comfort and a backchannel” to the administration, as Trump baselessly accused Mexico of not doing enough to stop Central American immigrants from traveling to the United States to seek asylum — which they are legally allowed to do.

An unnamed source who “directly communicates with the presidential palace in Mexico” told the Daily Beast Kushner was the person Mexico came to “rely” on. (However, the source also said they were unsure whether Kushner actually relayed their conversations to Trump.)

Ultimately, Trump’s reckless threats of tariffs against Mexico didn’t accomplish anything.

Trump wound up trying to convince the public that a deal reached with Mexico months ago was actually a result of his tariff threats — which were opposed even by some members of Trump’s own party.

And to try and wash away the stench of shame from his failure, Trump then lied about there being a secret additional part of the deal, but he has thus far refused to say what it is. Mexico, for its part, has denied that there are any more secret provisions of the agreement.

When a corrupt businessman with no diplomatic experience like Jared Kushner is seen as a more competent negotiator than Trump, you know there are some serious problems in this administration.
