Mitch McConnell hasn't looked Elizabeth Warren in the eye since silencing her on Senate floor
Donald Trump famously would not look German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the eye during their recent photo op, but Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has him beat. According to Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), McConnell has not spoken to her, and will not even look at her, since he silenced her for trying to read a letter from Coretta Scott King into the record, then allowed male senators to read the exact same letter. The moment, and particularly McConnell’s explanation of it, became a rallying cry for the resistance.
“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted,” McConnell said at the time, giving birth to a powerful rallying cry for the resistance.
In an interview to promote her new book, “This Fight Is Our Fight,” Warren told The Boston Globe that McConnell has taken things, well, like the worst kind of a man:
The moment went viral and earned Warren a round of generally favorable national press coverage — not to mention a fresh flood of campaign contributions from her national network.
It also, apparently, has earned her an enduring cold-shoulder from McConnell.
“I’ve spoken to him, but he has not spoken to me,” Warren said, laughing in a disbelieving way, shaking her head. “I say hello to Mitch every chance I get, and he turns his head.”
The fragility of men like McConnell might be amusing if they did not wield so much power. Thanks to Warren, and other women who are leading the resistance, perhaps McConnell and his fellow fragile men will not wield that power for long.
