Pelosi says House is proceeding with articles of impeachment against Trump
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that Donald Trump will be impeached.
Donald Trump will face articles of impeachment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday morning, putting a stain on Trump’s legacy in office.
“Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders … today I am asking our chairman to proceed with articles of impeachment,” Pelosi (D-CA) said in a statement from the Capitol.
Her announcement caps a monthslong investigation into Trump’s alleged withholding of military aid to force the country to investigate Trump’s political rivals.
In her statement, Pelosi declared “in America, no one is above the law.”
“The facts are uncontested: The President of the United States abused his power for his own political benefit, at the expense of our national security,” Pelosi said, adding that Trump “leaves us no choice but to act.”
Pelosi’s announcement came a day after the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing with constitutional scholars, who said that Trump had abused his office for his own gain, which is an impeachable offense.
It’s unclear the timeline for when the articles of impeachment will be drafted, how many of them there’ll be, and when the House will take a vote on them. However, reports from Wednesday suggest it could happen before the Christmas break.
Trump, for his part, dared the House to impeach him.
“The Do Nothing Democrats had a historically bad day yesterday in the House,” Trump tweeted. “They have no Impeachment case and are demeaning our Country. But nothing matters to them, they have gone crazy. Therefore I say, if you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate, and so that our Country can get back to business.”
