'We've seen enough': Local paper slams Trump on day of his big Florida rally
The Orlando Sentinel writes ‘there’s no point pretending we would ever recommend that readers vote for Trump,’ in a scathing editorial.
On the morning of Trump’s big rally in Orlando, the local newspaper dropped a scathing editorial imploring readers to reject Trump’s reelection bid.
“We’re here to announce our endorsement for president in 2020, or, at least, who we’re not endorsing: Donald Trump,” the Orlando Sentinel editorial board wrote Tuesday, 504 days before voters head to the polls to select the next president.
Why did the paper come out with its non-endorsement so early?
“Because there’s no point pretending we would ever recommend that readers vote for Trump,” the editorial board wrote.
The Orlando Sentinel has a long history of endorsing Republican candidates for president, including Mitt Romney (who lost to President Obama in 2012) and George W. Bush in 2000.
But Trump’s incessant lying, indecency, and betrayal of American interests are just too much for the right-leaning editorial board.
“So many lies — from white lies to whoppers — told out of ignorance, laziness, recklessness, expediency or opportunity,” the editorial board wrote about Trump’s relentless dishonesty.
The editorial board also lambasted Trump for his inability to learn from past mistakes, such as his recent interview when Trump said he would gladly accept dirt on political opponents from countries like China or Russia.
And the paper made sure to note Trump’s embarrassing behavior on the international stage, writing, “This nation must never forget that humiliating public moment in Helsinki in 2018 when the president of the United States chose to accept Vladimir Putin’s denials of Russian interference in the 2016 election over the unanimous assessment of the American intelligence community.”
Trump’s behavior “has diminished our standing in the world” and his actions in Helsinki were “a betrayal.”
The blunt rejection of Trump and everything Trump stands for came out the day Trump heads to Orlando for his big 2020 reelection campaign event.
Trump decided to hold his rally in Florida, despite the fact that his policies have ravaged the state. More than half a million Floridians paid more taxes last year, thanks to the Trump-backed GOP tax scam. While many Florida residents suffered, the richest 1% in the state saw a tax break worth almost $100,000, and corporate profits in the state shot up by 13%.
“The nation must endure another 1½ years of Trump. But it needn’t suffer another four beyond that,” the editorial board wrote.
“After 2½ years we’ve seen enough.”
