GOP congressman shamed for quoting Hitler to defend Trump

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) was slammed by Alabama’s Holocaust Commission for comparing Democrats to the Nazis.

The millions of people killed by the Nazis “deserve unique remembrance, and the words of those who conducted and orchestrated this genocide in Hitler’s name do not deserve to be recognized, much less reiterated in the halls of Congress,” the group said in a statement released on Tuesday.

“Such facile comparisons, used in order to demean opponents and gain political capital, should be actively avoided. Using such rhetoric not only trivializes our past, as well as the victims of this genocide, but also cheapens our current political discourse and maintains a divisive rhetoric all too common at the present time.”

The condemnation followed Brooks’ floor speech defending Trump after special counsel Robert Mueller submitted his report to the Department of Justice.

Brooks claims that Attorney General William Barr Mueller report summary has vindicated Trump, even though neither the public nor Congress has seen the report.

Democrats and the media, Brooks claimed, had promoted a “big lie” about Trump, echoing Hitler’s “big lie” rhetoric from his book Mein Kampf.

“America must reject ‘big lies’ or succumb to the danger that lurks, and horrific damage that results,” Brooks complained. He then went on to extensively quote from Hitler’s book on the floor of the House.

After the Holocaust Commission condemned him, Brooks doubled down on his smear by attacking the group, and he speculated that they were part of an anti-Trump conspiracy.

“The Alabama Holocaust Commission’s bizarre and history-ignoring letter prompts one to wonder how many of the Commission’s members joined America’s Socialist Democrats in undermining the legitimacy of the 2016 presidential election by also spreading the ‘Big Lie,’ without credible evidence, that President Trump colluded with the Russians to steal the 2016 presidential race,” he said in a statement.

Brooks is one of Trump’s staunchest allies in Congress. Trump hailed Brooks before the 2018 election as someone who “fought by my side” to enact racist border policies and strip health care coverage from millions of people.

Before his latest embarrassing episode, Brooks infamously accused Democrats and President Barack Obama of “war on whites.” He also falsely claimed that the Antarctic ice sheet is growing and that rocks falling into the ocean cause sea levels to rise as part of an effort deny the existence of climate change.

He once said of undocumented immigrants: “As your congressman on the house floor, I will do anything short of shooting them. Anything that is lawful, it needs to be done because illegal aliens need to quit taking jobs from American citizens.”

As many Republicans retired before the party’s wipeout in the 2018 election, Brooks said that they were retiring because there was an “assassination risk” from “leftists.”

When federal workers were suffering because Trump shut down the government, Brooks said they had a “benefit” from the action.

Brooks has been a member of Congress long before Trump was elected, but his beliefs are strikingly similar to those Trump held before he was a political figure.

The two men are intertwined, and it is no surprise that in his zeal to defend his ally Brooks made a ridiculous comment and is getting roundly criticized for it.
