Beto O'Rourke just raised a whopping $6.7 million to take out Ted Cruz
Beto O’Rourke brought in the largest quarterly haul of any Democratic Senate candidate in the country — and he’s prepared to give Ted Cruz the fight of his life.
Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who is challenging incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz for a Senate seat, brought in a truly spectacular amount of money in the most recent quarter. Per his latest filings, he has netted $6.7 million since January.
According to the Texas Tribune, this is the largest quarterly haul of any Democratic Senate candidate in the country. Even more astoundingly, in keeping with his campaign pledge, Beto raised this entire haul from 141,000 individual donors — without taking money from political action committees.
O’Rourke managed to top his competitor’s fundraising in previous quarters as well.
Polls show O’Rourke within single digits of Cruz, and now he’s got millions in grassroots funding to take him on. Cruz, whose approval is underwater, knows his re-election is no longer a sure thing. He has warned fellow Republicans that Texas Democrats are going to “crawl over broken glass” to vote this year — which was validated by a spike in blue primary turnout.
Cruz kicked off his re-election campaign with a blunder. One of his first attacks on O’Rourke was to make fun of how he uses a childhood nickname rather than his real first name, Robert — a weird choice for someone who also doesn’t use his first name. He’s also aligned himself with the continual Republican spending scandals, conveniently choosing campaign stops where private jets can drop him off. O’Rourke, on the other hand, traveled to the coast to help people rebuild after Hurricane Harvey.
In what increasingly looks like a wave election year, the Texas Senate race is shaping up to be more interesting than anyone could have imagined. And more surprises are bound to follow.
